After the Bear had read several critiques of the Coen Brothers "Burn After Reading", the tendency was to feel "big letdown" after "Old Country For Old Men" but being a "coen head", I just had to take a peek at their new production and though it's not their greatest, I liked it plenty!
Joe Williams of the St. Louis Post wasn't too kind to the film but one thing we both agreed on: Brad Pitt is hilarious working with Frances McDormand in a Washington D.C. health club and with Pitt and McDormand hoping to reap rewards for information found in a lost memoir of a fired CIA lower eschelon spook, they dance there way around the nation's capitol eventually finding there way to the Russian Embassy where they encounter whatelse somber Russkies!
By the way, the CIA guy is none other than everyone"s favorite wierdo John Malkovich!
Everybody's sleeping with everybody and word ..... is employed at record breaking pace so for you people who get the shakes when you here the word, this flick is not for you. When will we Yanks get over our sexual bugaboos and enjoy life a bit? Are we really holier than the rest of the world?
There are too many of my favorites cavorting around in this one for me not to like "Burn After Reading." Clooney, Swinton, McDormand, Malkovich, Pitt, what more can I say and you know they are loving every minute with the boys directing. Actually I'm told they take turns being the top honcho. Why can't we have a few belly laughs with our friends those nutcases, the Coens without trying to dissect the meaning of life? Thank you Joel and Ethan for all those old familiar places!

ST. LOUIS RAMS AND WIDE RECEIVERS
The Bear does not like to talk about "pencil neck" wide receivers. Who can forget the good old days when the mid summer football camp was enjoined and players lined up in their 1/2 shirts and shorts at various positions. Each position had its standard number of players interested in those jobs but when it came to wide receivers, you know way out there from the action, what you got was 25 guys just so anxious to catch the ball. Half of em would not be there when August 15th rolled around and pads were distributed for the real game of football.
The St. Louis Rams, my Rams, who are this week considered to be the very worst team in the NFL because of being decapitated by the tough Philadelphia Eagles, are taking on the defending Super Bowl Champs, the New York Giants here in St. Louis Sunday and suddenly there has been a rash of injuries at the WR position which has led to the team signing a receiver no one loved much when he last played here in 1998, Eddie Kennison. Coach Al Saunders, who I have always felt was a solid offensive mind had much to do with this having coached Eddie at KC. Earlier this year we had Reche Caldwell in camp and he has always been in my mind a good wide out but after cutting him, it appears he was not in the mix. There were many others who might have been considered. After all they would be replacing the worst receiver in St. Louis Ram history,
#83 Drew Bennett, who we paid considerable money to when he became a free agent having left Tennessee where at one time, he supposedly was their best receiver. Unfortunately the Rams liked what they saw. I can find no Ram fan who has anything good to say about Drew these days or last season. He is not too fast! He is not too fearless! He wears goooy white gloves. He misses assignments quite regularly. While we don't like players to get hurt, it would have been far better we hurt his feelings and cut this underachiever.
Now we drafted Ronnie Avery second and the fleet young man had only one game in the pre-season where he played any length of time and he performed well and showed some of the speed we expected of him. But alas, he's hurt too! So many Rams continue to have hurts or owiees or whatever, one might have to be concerned about training methods utilized by this organization.
Avery must and should be productive if he is ever healthy.
Keenan Burton will play this Sunday. He did not see much action in game one and did not see many passes coming his way. Of course Philly blitzed poor Bulger the Ram QB so often and so successfully that we might deduce his time as the starter of this team are numbered. Burton, who definitely has talent and according to his college coach, former Ram head man Rich Brooks, as much talent as Issac Bruce. Wow! I concur and feel he should be starting with Tory Holt!
Dane Looker is a solid four receiver, who can get you first downs and more and has longevity with the team and is a producer, not a talker. Dane is a solid citizen!
Now we come to our captain and smiling receiver, one who has been a sensation for many a year for the St. Louis Rams Tory Holt. Tory has had a lot of trouble in the past two years staying healthy but still producing good numbers. Unfortunately we think he and Coach Linehan do not connect and hopefully this is not true of Coach Saunders.

Our RG Richie Incognito was a no show in game one and who knows when he will explode or get hurt again. Our right tackle Alex Barron is blamed for every mistake this line makes and is the only player who continues to struggle his way thru game after game. Our tight ends, led by Randy McMichael gave a decent account of themselves in the Philly game. Romberg will start this Sunday for Bell and can expected to give a fair accounting of himself.
WHEN WILL ST. LOUIS BRASS, GM'S, HEAD COACHES ETC. START TO REALIZE WE NEED SOME TOUGH ROUGH SMART OFFENSIVE LINEMEN TO PROTECT OUR QB OUT THERE AND BLOCK FOR THE GREAT STEVEN JACKSON? WE MUST GET TOUGHER TO WIN!

LETS GET SOMETHING STRAIGHT
It's so wonderful to be nicey nicey about your opponent but I cringe every time this Democrat hears one of my candidates like Joe Biden say: John McCain is my friend! We all know they are a part of major club, called the US Senate and boy the decorum there is like no other body in the world.
Why that might be great for the US Senate, forget it when the gloves come off in any political race. I can speak to a lower escelon race as three times the Bear stood as a candidate for Democratic Committeeman of Gravois Township. I am happy to report that I was successful in every race and after 12 years of politicing for various Demos, retired from the field undefeated. Now even for these lowly offices, you were subjected to a variety of browbeating from my opponent's followers. Whereas I ran as a Democrat running against other Democrats in my race, it was quite funny when at the Webster Groves Community's July 4th parade, while waving to the crowd on the street, several Repub folks held up the almighty finger to show their disdain for any Demo! My favorite comment came from a Republican State Senator in Mo, A.Clifford Jones: When asked in my Government class: "How do you feel about mud-slinging in politics, had this to say: "When the son-of-a-bitch thats my opponent slings mud, I'm slinging it back!"
Now for all you holier than thou politicos that feel the two sides in this year's Presidential race are getting rowdy, I say: Bullshit! If you know anything about the political scenes of year's past, going back to the earliest of battles, e.g. The Washington-Adams-Hamilton-Jefferson days, each side had their own newspapers which had no mercy on their opponents. The Andrew Jackson era which gave us the very first Democrat in the White House was as brutal as any we can recollect and Andy was given to fighting a dual now and then.
Now I find Repubs or independents leading towards the elephant party, all want to claim to be above the battle but in reality they are about the worst, take for instance Karl Rove, a slovenly,
crude, icey, punk, who called the present candidate for the White House every name in the game when he ran against the no-show National Guard pilot, I mean AWOL puke, who has given us eight years of the worst government in our history. Yes, the nasty clean shaven white Republicans were more naucious in 2000 than their Demo counterparts when fighting with one another. Shameful!
Now lets talk facts: First of all, Bush stole the election. We'll give him that since we have been guilty of that from time to time. Then he gave us 8 years of lazy, lacadaisical effort, got us into a ridiculous war, supported by the man who wants to keep this occupation going! I am a veteran so don't wave the flag around me. I served in the area now governed by "the squeeky pig with lipstick" a major fraud, who if she ever allows herself to be interviewed by the press will be shown to have supported the "bridge to nowhere" and bilked her own constituents out of big bucks collecting her per diem on travel to a house she didn't live in! This "my friends" is what I call "cheating." She's part of the group of Repubs up there who would have made Lou Brock seem sincere while he pilfered third base. McCain, when he wasn't collecting rich wives, was all too busy taking his slices of cake under the table and was barely punished by the Ethics Committee in the Senate for conduct unbecoming a US Senator.
I don't ever recollect WWII military being given medals for being imprisoned but I'll give him a pass on that one. At least he showed up unlike the mealey mouthed phony from Texas who not only didn't show for his Alabama national guard meetings, but didn't show on issues like the middle east where he chose to sit this one out when the Palistinians and Israelis were begging for US intervention, where he chose to delay, (not Tom Delay) when thousands were suffering from the ravages of Katrina. He also, with the blessing of our dear friend "old Mac", tried to privatize social security, one of the greatest legislative efforts in American History (mid thirties under FDR), and vetoed an important bill to help our vets only this year because he felt there were too many boondoggles in the bill. Say, I ask, has Iraq been a super boondoggles with all these businesses donning military gear and fighting over there for three times what we pay our troops.
Yes, and the Senator from Arizona wants to keep them there "100 Years" if necessary. Pardon me mister but didn't I see you walking over there with more protection on your body than "Transformer!" "Oh things are just peachy kean!"
McCain is another of these doubting Thomas's when it comes to the environment. He has never been known to favor legislation which would take out after the polluters. In fact he never saw a corporation he didn't embrace.
Well, guess what Lehman Brothers is all but going down on Wall Street, another company which
bought the Republican laissez-faire form of economics which made Herbert Hoover and his boys so famous over the years. More is to come but don't worry Bush, you'll probably be down there in Texas cutting down trees while our Democrats will be doing what they did in the 1930's, fight our way out of the Depression with programs to put people back to work, you Repubs know, those Socialistic kind of programs like the Post Office, Social Security, Medicare, Aid to Education, CCC, AAA, all those Eugene Debs type ideas passed during the New Deal.
Lets compare Presidents over the past 150 years. Here is the Republican lineup: Fighting for the worst President of all times but losing to the present occupant: Warren G. Harding 1920-24.
"Silent Cal" Coolidge, his quiet leadership led us into the Depression! 1924-1928. William McKinley 1896-2002) His political machine might have been the dirtiest of all time and his boys apologized for selecting Teddy Roosevelt as his running mate! Thank God, one Repub we can respect. Oh, of course Tricky Dickey Nixon, who I personally didn't think was too bad, was run out of Washington and oh yes, a guy some people seem to like who gave us a deficit which has hurt us to this day. Bonzo Reagan! Bush Sr I would rate ok and he must be shamed shamed shamed by his son's lack of interest in governing and major indecent and wrongful decisions on foreign policy.
Then you have the Demos and I'llbe quick since their record speaks for itself. Bill Clinton, two terms and just a great and smart President, who did make some personal decisions that we could question and paid for it. Jimmy Carter brought us peace in the Middle East, at least for awhile,
but he might have been the weakest of our recent Presidents Democratically. Lyndon Johnson was a powerful leader, who gave us the "Great Society" and made civil rights a reality, rather than a talking point. Medicare--Great! So many sensational programs. Then there was the only four time elected President FDR. We can only say: THE GREATEST PRESIDENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY. Woodrow Wilson took us thru WWI! FDR took us thru WW2.
Enough Bear: How any independent, how any laborer or middle class individual could even think about giving Repubs another 4 years to destroy our country, infrstructure, foreign policy,
energy and economy boggles my mind. I probably didn't really say what I think: THE BUSHIES SHOULD BE INDICTED AND SENT AWAY AND MAY EVEN HAVE TO FACE THE INTERNATIONAL COURT AT THE HAGUE FOR THEIR INVASION AND OCCUPATION OF IRAQ! One of the biggest jokes was Bush's comment about bringing a divided country together. He not only made this government the bain of every joke but ordered his Attorney Generals to
violate the law time and time again in their relations with the United States Congress. This Repub run bunch of outlaws ignored the US Constitution time and time again! Of course they were aided six of those eight years by a shoddy Republican Congress.
The Bear wants Barak Hussein Obama to fight with every weapon in his arsenal to counter the dirty, ugly, false, profain, TV ads, E Mails, he will encounter. One last item: This guy Obama is just as much a hero when it comes to his attitude about war and the military as would be hero McCain! The Bear served his two years and he's patriotic too. So are his counterparts who served in Korea, Afganistan, Iraq, Europe, the Pacific and at home. This is not true of Bush. The worst criminal act is to take a country falsely into war, knowing young men and women are going to die and innocent civilians will be slaughtered! Especially when he and his vice president (had at least five deferments I'm told to keep him out of service) wave the flag! When I think of WWI and WWII and compare them to the weenie wars of Grenada and Iraq, I ask you, who was called upon to fight for our country and who led our country in these major catastrophic battles! I ask you!
So come November please, I ask my fellow Democrats, don't be lazy and stay home, my friends who are Independent, be especially independent and "throw the bums out." And then my fellow Dems, it will be up to you to fly into Washington and begin to work extra hard to clean up the crap you will see waiting for you left behind by the most inept, decrepid, stinko, phony, crooked bunch of bad guys our beloved country has ever had lead them! So are his counterparts who served in Korea, Afganistan, Iraq, Europe, the Pacific and at home. This is not true of Bush. The worst criminal act is to take a country falsely into war, knowing young men and women are going to die and innocent civilians will be slaughtered! Especially when he and his vice president (had at least five deferments I'm told to keep him out of service) wave the flag! When I think of WWI and WWII and compare them to the weenie wars of Grenada and Iraq, I ask you, who was called upon to fight for our country and who led our country in these major catastrophic battles! I ask you!
So come November please, I ask my fellow Democrats, don't be lazy and stay home, my friends who are Independent, be especially independent and "throw the bums out." And then my fellow Dems, it will be up to you to fly into Washington and begin to work extra hard to clean up the crap you will see waiting for you left behind by the most inept, decrepid, stinko, phony, crooked bunch of bad guys our beloved country has ever had lead them! For the people of New Orleans and Mississippi this the Bear has to say: "No Brownie, you and your lazy boss did not due a hellova job!"

THE BEAR SALUTES OUR LABOR FORCE
In 1935 Robert Wagner, a great Congressman and Frances Perkins, Secretary of Labor, put together a bill that allowed for the labor folk of the United States of America to collectively bargain for wages, benefits etc., a bill, which would allow for many American to advance his life style in the years to come. With legislation setting a minimum wage at .40 an hour and a variety of other perks, the United States of America was able to move the Industrial Revolution in this country forward in a dignified yet controversial way.
Republicans battled every social program introduced by the Democratic Party under the great FDR but because of the laissez-faire that had existed before the advent of Roosevelt, and the suffering of the American people in the early thirties, Democrats controlled both houses of the Congress and this led to what became the New Deal, a series of laws, which to this day, have been a source of controversy but no doubt aided in the growth of this country economically.
Today, the major issue socially is: HEALTHCARE! There is no doubt that in the next ten years a bill will emerge which will, after much debate, fiibustering in the US Senate, speeches by fear mongers that we are becoming a Socialist country, but it will come. In what way it will be fashioned only the times will tell. The Bear has always supported the "single payer" program, which has been espoused by people like Congressman Dennis Kucinich of Ohio. We need to get rid of the private sector completely when it comes to healthcare.
Is healthcare a right? You better believe it! We must allow equality in service to every American when it comes to protecting our health. Almost every progressive country has some form of socialized medicine but for some reason, we are under the impression, the world would come tumbling down on us should we adopt a national program.
So as we stop today to focus however slightly on the advance of Labor or the decline of their influence on American life, remember that in the mid-thirties, the Republican Party opposed Social Security, in the mid sixties Medicare, and in the 21st Century National Healthcare!
Congrats to the pioneers of American Labor, men like Walter Reuther, John L. Lewis, yes even Jimmy Hoffa, wherever you are, for the fight for the common man!
Politically, I urge every independent, who labors every day to create a better America to remember the candidate who will be standing with you in the years ahead. It won't be John McCain and his Repub Party.

A GREAT DAY WAS HAD BY ALL!
Yesterday, a day which is always highly revered by teams of the South County Fantasy Football League, some of the finest football minds in all of North America, sat huddled in the catacombs of Commissioner Craig Burian's residence to put together their 2008 team.
This great league, founded in1992, is made up of a polyglot of devious engineers, who worship at the altar of the names of yesteryear, Camp, Rockne, Yost, Crysler, Blaik, Bryant, Faurot and fashion their teams on this day, hoping "this is our year!"
They came down the stairs, from outback where their is an aroma eminating from the library on the hill with stacks of works by Shakesphere, Wardsworth, Hawthorne, Cooper and are welcomed by the vivacious mistress of the household, Laura Burian, who probably has more sports memorabilia put away than most macho men we know! The Assassins are there, the Villuns, yes the rugged Raiders, defending champion Gorillas (Apes), the BJ Rhinos, Kevin Garavaglia's Garvey team, almost a dynasty a few years ago, the Rams, Steelers, Marauders, Bud Lites, wow what a conglameration of characters, a veritable plethera of football treasure!
In they came, the coniving John Gianino, whispering possible trades of draft picks or hoping to move up or down with a pick that might land him a hard running back, maybe McFadden or what about Chris Johnson, who runs the 40 in 4:2 seconds, Bill Lee, who came in from Louisville yesterday to play some golf and is second guessing himself about allowing Donovan McNabb to go on the board and keeping Derick Anderson, and the Rams with ageless Paul Cross and Harold Hall, who never saw a Ram he didn't like but who is nervous about his QB Mark Bulger. Yep, and there is Joe Guttierez sporting a Kirby Puckett hair style! In comes Mike Hermannes and Tim Thomas of the always tough Raiders, confidently predicting victory this year. Back in the back, sit John G., Bill Lee, Commissioner Craig, Bill Metz and yes, Gary Greer is coming in. Mike Holzem knows his Marauders will be in it this year. Jeff Chestnus as always comes up with a star no one had heard of and may be a fantasy in itself. Your's truly, Coach Bob Christian is back sipping a good, hot, cup of special coffee so he won't doze off. After all, he's been up half the night, worrying about his Rhinos.
Commissioner Craig approaches the podium and Raider fans cell phones prepare for action.The name Reggie Wayne goes out to the highways and byeways and for four hours these football moguls fashion their teams. We will then select our starters and scribinees and the 2008 season will be upon us! Names like Ocho Cinco, Gentle Ben, TJ Housmandzadeh, Brodie, Donovan, Hussein (how'd he get in there) will be announced and the comments about these selections will have to be bleeped out at press conferences all over the area.
What a divine day and great gathering of some of the neatest people I know, competing with each other as if our lives depended upon it. It goes by too quickly and some of us, we worry about our fantasy baseball team's interests competing with those of our football squads.
You gotta love it but what are we doing with our time when there are so many other important hours and minutes to divide our interests. Well, like tonight, when its bedtime, it will be time for some fantasy sex!

THANK YOU BARACK!
The Bear is elated this Sunday afternoon as the delegates to the Democratic Convention fly into Denver and make their way to their respective hotels where their state delegations are already enjoying the atmosphere of one of the most important Democratic Conventions of all time.
As a delegate to the 1976 Convention in my favorite city, New York, you should know that there are many social activities during the week of the convention but delegates are generally caucusing,
politicing, going to the floor, and then staying up late as most of the activities end very late in the evening, when you go out to eat and then tumble into bed and wake up early the next morning to attend caucus meetings of your state. Its four days and nights of frenzy!
The Bear household will be watching intently, especially C-Span, where all speeches will be featured and very little side comments from so-called experts about what you are seeing. But of course we will want to sample CNN and MSNBC from time to time. FOX NEWS is not allowed to be shown at this location.
Friday night the Bear slept soundly until around 2:30 AM when he was awakened by some mysterious political intinct and yes, you got it, shortly thereafter the text message appeared and Joe Biden had been selected as the vice-presidential running mate for Barack Obama.
The Bear salutes "the Hussein one" for his wisdom as their is one Democrat that is somewhat of a universal favorite and that is Joe! He's a fighter for his principles! He's thoroughly Democratic thru and thru (the Bear loves this). He reminds us of Harry Truman who gave em hell and made em like it and whopped Dewey's ass in 48! He is an international icon respected all over the world for his sensible take on world events. He's fun because his big mouth can and will get us all in trouble.
He's just what the doctor ordered! So Barack Hussein Obama, very good decision!
Can't wait for Claire McCaskill to speak on Monday night and of course the Democrats will honor one of the greatest US Sentors ever. I'm talking about Ted Kennedy, who matches Henry Clay,
John C. Calhoun, Issac Hill, Daniel Webster, Robert Taft, Hubert H. Humphrey, Tom Eagleton, Stu Symington, LBJ, all the great ones who have graced the United States Senate. We all know Teddy is suffering from brain cancer and is taking chemo, radiation and all those dreaded drugs which keep you going! The Bear is wild in his admiration for this great Democrat from Massachusetts and will be watching with several hankies provided for the event!
We will talk more on the convention, always a major happening on the Bear's calandar.
Hey, how about the Ram's perfornance on Saturday! In the Third Pre-Season game, (I call them Exhibition Games) the St. Louis Rams looked smart, you bet, turning in another stellar defensive effort, with the Baltimore Ravens managing only 10 points (San Diego 6 last week) and the Rams offense waking up with Al Saunder's offensive line firing out on all cylinders in the running game and Mark Bulger, receiving time to throw sparkled, especially finding Keenan Burton and Donnie Avery
our two rookie receivers time and time again. Not on the field: Orlando Pace and Steven Jackson. Leckey, the Rams new center is making a mark for himself and is close to winning a job.
Richie Incognito was stellar at right guard and the offensive unit frankly looked like a team! The Rams win 24-10 and are now 2-1 but most important, the Bear has always said: "The Third Game of the Pre-Season is the most important and this time it was the Rams getting it done. With a major tough schedule in the first six weeks of the season, this team must be ready and stay away from turn overs and penalties and continue with the good defense they showed in the last two games.
Will Witherspoon, if he stays healthy, is definitely on his way to post season honors and Leonard Little looks quick as he comes back after an injury prone 2007. So lets go Rams! Lets keep up the good work. No doubt the regulars will not play much in the final game against KC and when they line up against the tough Philly Eagles on opening day in Philadelphia Steven Jackson will be back, hopefully the Big O and the team will be ready to reverse last year's rough season.
So here we are at the end of August and many neat events coming our way in St. Louis! We'll be blogging and enjoying each and every day. When the Bear rises in the morning and peeks out his bedroom window at the beautiful Fenton forest with birdies and squirrels, bunnies and sometimes Bambies trotting by, it reminds him: WHAT A WONDERFUL LIFE! AMEN BROTHER!

BEAR SELECTS JOE BIDEN
OK BARRACK: ITS TIME TO GET OFF THE POT AND MAKE A SELECTION ALTHOUGH I COULD WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK WHEN YOU SELECT THE GREAT SENATOR FROM DELAWARE, JOE BIDEN!
Yea, I know, those Hillary haters will say the Bear doesn't like Hill! Wrong, in fact Hussein could surprise a lot of news media weisels and choose to go with a sure winner, Hillary! I'm actually a bit afraid my selection is not as powerful as the first lady but I'm interested in winning and then governing our country and Joe Biden is so sharp.
The great Senator and Chairman of the Senate's Foreign Relations Committee has a brilliant mind and works well with the "other side" "Repubs". He and the wonderful Senator from Indiana Dick Lugar, have been a strong twosome over the past 7 years in defending the Senate's
perogatives against the zany diplomatic antics of the Repub President. Both Biden and Lugar are solid citizens and with Joe on the ticket, my boy from Hawaii, Kansas and later Illinois will be on his way to victory. More on him later.
QUESTION: WHY ARE SO MANY REPUB SENATORS STAYING AWAY FROM THE CONVENTION IN ST. PAUL MN IN SEPTEMBER? WE ALL KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS ONE!
THE BEAR HOUSEHOLD WILL BE TUNING IN BIG TIME TO THE CONVENTION OF THE PEOPLE NEXT WEEK AND CHEERING EACH AND EVERY DEMO WHO MOUNTS THE ROSTRUM INCLUDING OUR OWN LOVEABLE AND BRILLIANT CLAIRE McCASKILL, WHO WILL BE SPEAKING ON NIGHT ONE AND HAS GRACED THE US SENATE WITH HER HARRY TRUMAN LIKE QUALITIES! Heading for the chow line for left overs. Am I still in the Army Charlie Hamilton? Then its baseball with the RedBirds taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates here in St. Louie! Several of the Pirates are on the first place Blue Dart Fantasy team in the Boys Night Out Baseball League.
The Bear in Twenty Years has never reigned as champion but we are oh so hopeful this will be the year. Our new acquistion Manny will not be required to cut his hair. The Bear is thinking of joining Manny with a new hair style! We all love Manny and Davy Wright and Alfonso Soriano walks on water. We also picked up a sleeper recently in Felipe Lopez, who can play real well!
These Darts are fighters and Oswalt is starting to win win win! How about Dempster! Oh yea!
Next movie: Man on a Wire at the Frontenac Theater soon. It gets glowing reports from all circles.
