The Bear hasn't been stimulated to visit with you over the past few months. Oh why great blogger?
Well, first movies coming out have for the most part not excited the Bear. Most of my movie watching has been via DVD. Summer does have that affect. However a smart, totally different flick was "In Bruges" starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes, a movie that takes you to the city of Bruges in Belgium and a snappy two hours of chases, dialogue and comedy which keeps you glued to your 61" inch high def Sony! (Ugly American). The Bear loves old movies and here are a few viewed in recent weeks: Song of Bernadette (A beautiful 1950's Movie of the Year about the miracle at Lourdes starring Oscar Winner Jennifer Jones and such movie neat guys like Vincent Price, Lee J. Cobb and William Bickford. A beautiful and true story and what I liked about it was the stringent rules applied to would be miracles by the Roman Catholic Church. Say what you want about the Church, it continues to be one of the greatest and powerful entities ever created and no wonder. If you believe and I certainly do, its creator was none other than JC himself! If you want more, read Franz Wurfel's book "The Song of Bernadette." You don't have to believe, be a Catholic, follow Mohammed, Buddha, or whoever. This really happened and miracles continue to this day!
Other neat "at your home" movie included: The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 which stars the great Walter Matthau and takes you to one of NY's very busy Pelham subway where highjackers, led by the magnificent Robert Shaw (Jaws), take over and cause havoc. Comedy, great story, suspense and great actors, (I forgot Martin Balsam), and you find yourself grinning from ear to ear and thats not being corny!
The Bear wants to recomend a couple days reading with none other than the former Speaker of the US House, Newt Gingrich who collaborated in a well done novel about Pearl Harbor: Pear Harbor.
Yes, I know, its amazing that the Bear would back a Republican like Newt but this is a solid rendition of the events leading up to Dec. 7th or 8th (whatever time you or our friends of Nipon tell you it was). There is already a sequel to this one out there. I immediately raced to Blockbuster to rent Tora Tora Tora to follow up on my reading! Wow, OK, OK!
I couldn't believe it but Barbara Christian actually sat and stayed seated for all of Henry Fonda and Claudette Cobert in "Drums Along the Mohawk" a 1930ish frontier movie which is still a stimulating and exciting visit to the Revolutionary period in upper New York! What a time it must of been to live out there with the Injuns constantly threatenind and the Red Coats waiting around every corner.
Oh yes, another DVD favorite last week was one of the all timers in Hollywoodland, the Duke starring in "The High and the Mighty" about a Hawaii to San Fran flight that goes bad. The whistling in this one, sensational and so many old time stars strapped into their seats with bedlam
a foot on this flight!
To the Baseball Wars: Yes, the St. Louis Cardinals deserve a "hats off." This young team led by the brilliant mentor Tony LaRussa, has been oneof the top teams in baseball this year with a young and steady squad. Led by the likes of Ryan Ludwick, the amazing Rick Ankiel, the great Albert Pujols, a pitching staff of young arms Waignwright, Wellemeyer, leadership behind the plate with Yadier Molina this suprising Mound City squad shows what "teamwork" can provide to a decent team! Even with the great Pujols this Cardinal team exudes the kind of production that leads to winning baseball and "the race is on" once again in St. Louis, surely the finest baseball city of them all. "Oh, if the Bear could only have his Brownies back!"
Time Out: yes, its time to rest a bit from the political wars, even though Obama and McCain continue to romp around the globe selling their wares. These campaigns are much much too long and why Americans demand this physical and mental test for our candidates for the Presidency baffles me. WHAT DOES IT PROVE that the never ending primaries and debates cost big bucks
and leads to lethargy on more important issues like the Economy, Iraq, the Environment, Energy etc etc etc. One thing is certain: If we want to make the kind of change in this country necessary for real change, we need 1. A Democratic President 2. A Democratic Congress with huge majorities and 3. State Governors and City Mayors Democratic, all backed by well prepared, smart leaders not worrying about the Social mores of the country but the policies and programs which yield results for all classes in our society. The last eight years of Republican administration policy has been the most inept in our history! Thats right! OUR HISTORY! Should the Demos prove to be successful in November they and they alone will have to right the ship of state and will be responsible for the results. Lets not mix it up with a Republican Congress and Demo President or vice versa. WHY NOT A GOVERNMENT THAT GOVERNS!
Here are a few thoughts to close out today's blog:
1. Would you commies in China please get your act together on putting together this year's summer Olympics? Time is running short, and guess what? Now the locusts are coming!
2. Please Mr. DeWitt: Lets do something with "Ballpark Village" Florida bought out US Sugar and who knows MO may have to take over the St. Louis Cardinals and clean up the bayou north of the ballpark.
3. Is High Definition TV hurting physical presence at athletic events. With ticket prices up, gas up,
drinking and brawling plentiful and athletes pampered, NFL, AL, NL, NHL, NBA beware!
4. We all miss the lovely Georgia Frontiere. She brought the Rams to St. Louis. She supported many a charity in the St. Louis area. This team has brought us a Super Bowl and some very poor football as well. Note: The team will be out there in late July readying itself for the pre-season and the opening game in Philly. Question: Has the team improved in the off-season. We say YES!
Al Saunders is now the Offensive Coordinator. The Offensive Line, physically destroyed last year is back led by the great Orlando Pace at Left Tackle. Our Defense has been strengthened with good draft day work and additions up front! Don't downplay the acquisition of Kicker Josh Brown and the Bear is going out on a limb and say the surprise of this year will be Wide Receiver Donnie Avery! THIS KID CAN FLY!
The Bear is now departing to "clip his stock coupons" and weep!

BEAR IS TIRED TIRED TIRED OF DO-GOODERS!
LOBBYIST: TO TRY TO INFLUENCE PUBLIC OFFICIALS, MOST NOTABLY, MEMBERS OF THE US CONGRESS (LEGISLATIVE BODY).
I have just been notified that the presumed leader of the Bear's Party, the Democratic Party, (not democrat as the Repubs call us) has dropped plans to hire Mr. Jim Johnson as part of the team that will help the presumed nominee pick his vice-presidential running mate. Why? He, at one time was a lobbyist for Fannie Mae.
Lets get something straight you do goodin, super libs, "holier than thou", quirky, cooky, spookie, wussielike Demos. Its time to start playing tough with these Repubs!!!!
First of all, lobbyists are good!!!!! Yes, you heard the Bear. Lobbyists forever, have informed our legislators of the functions of the companies, labor unions, teachers unions, lawyers groups, educators unions, pharmaceutical organizations, internationals, foreign countries, representing their interests. They try to sell their wares and most of them are rock solid, fair minded and no more about the issue they represent than any president (especially this dumbo), Congressman, Senator, Judge, Cabinet member, commissioner etc etc etc. Yes, some are "bad guys and gals" and we have the rules and laws to temper their behavior.
What these simon purists writers, columnists, nuns, priests, ministers, wimps, he-shes, editors and others would prefer is we have people with little or no experience trying to legislate, execute and adjudicate some of the most complex issues of this or any other time.
Listen here folks, "we've got trouble my friends, trouble right here in the US of A". We've got gas which is making me gassier; Iraq, "get the hell out of there and fast; the economy, "Oh wo is me!";
weather and she's a changin fast and faster, earthquakes, hurricanes, cyclones, sleet, snow, hale and no water in California and too much water in the middle west. We've got horny priests, unholy ministers, football and baseball players on steroids, maybe golfers too! We've got underpaid workers and overpaid CEO's. We don't have rebellion in the streets of Boston, LA, St. Paul, Denver, St. Louie, Chicagie, Pittsburgh, New Haven or the Florida Keys! But the candle is burning thin!
For the new administration, led by Barack Hussein Obama to succeed and they will succeed, we need professional people, lobbyists or no lobbyists, people who know the turf they are playing on, not rookies praising God, Allah, Buddha and preaching hell fire!
Its very interesting to me that the most non-glamorous of the candidates in the two parties, Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul, are by far, the men who are not afraid to stand tall and declare what needs to be said about many of the issues of our day! Yea, I know, I support Obama but listen up, Mr. Do-gooder! We need action and professional governing to save this country and you and McCain fumbling around issuing edicts about the men and women who know what it takes to make a government function will not get it done.
John McCain has called for a series of "Lincoln-Douglas" discussions to take place around the country. To this the Bear says: "Yes" But please no fumbling, stumbling, bumbling when it comes to selecting people with good backgrounds, who are honest, and "KNOW THE TERRITORY" to being shunned for their knowledge, this has got to stop!
Lets get the very best to make up for the total inefficiency of the "Bush wackers" who have all but destroyed this great country of ours.

WHAT HOPPON TO MY LAST BLOG?
For some reason my most recent blog about the change from Charter to AT&T and the emergence of C-SPAN 3 in my new TV package was not accepted by the powers to be. Perhaps the Bush-Cheney boys were responsible since a few barbs were thrown their way.
Let it be known we in this household are awaiting the end of this administration with glee! It has been a disaster.
We are also completely excited about our new cable relationship with AT&T and look forward to some great programs including the NFL Network, also in this group of channels provided.
So, yes after five years of begging, calling, and writing to Charter for C-SPAN 3, we have our great channel and we should witness some fine congressional hearings and an abundance of great history.
Happy Memorial Day from St. Louis, MO and we await the start of the Stanley Cup Series tonight between Detroit and Pittsburgh in High Definition!

THANK YOU KEITH OLBERMANN
Every so often a book, movie, speech, person, group might serve to energize somebody, someone, another group, a city, a state, a nation.
For those of you who sometimes turn on MSNBC at 8:00 PM, (7:00 PM CENTRAL), you are treated to maybe the best of the best TV commentators. The Bear is talking about Keith Olbermann, former ESPN star who graced us for a time with some of the best in sports reporting and now has become a stalwart of the MSNBC Team, maybe the "Point Man" if I may be so bold! Aw right, you Chris Matthews fans stop shaking!
Tonight in his all too infrequent "Special Reports", Keith laid it on the table as no reporter in the past seven years of the failed Bush Presidency have. It is a bit interesting this day that only an hour before, the scourge of "illegal immigrants", Lou Dobbs on CNN had almost lost it in attacking the Bush Administration for its gross incompetence.
Back to Olbermann. We all know Bill you know who still has the ratings on the 8-9 shows but battling him tooth and nail is Mr. Olbermann's smart and totally different hour of discourse, wit and strong liberal recitation. But after his 12 minute end of the show remarks which were in fact quite personal and would probably invite a duel in the days of Andrew Jackson, one could not doubt that the press has finally had it with this bozo in the White House but only the great Keith succinctly and directly put it on the airwaves for Americans to digest but Keith, I'm happy to announce: "Americans do get it on this guy and you strongly reinforced their feelings. Thank You Thank You Thank You!!!
Sure the conservatives of the Repub party will be up in arms but attacking the wrong guy tomorrow morning, when they should be leading the "impeach Bush" crowd for what he has wrought. What will be the ramifications for this reporter with the gonads to "say it as it is?" What will Rush have to say tomorrow in answer to the words of wisdom given us this night? Will the FCC Bushies be up in arms and investigating NBC?
For way too long for whatever, the news media, probably out of respect for our troops, have been oh so reticent about the policies and failures linked to the Iraq fiasco. Finally Olbermann has moved the extra mile to point out that most of the statements of THIS PRESIDENT on the war effort have rivaled Disney's "Fantasia" in their predictions, execution, and follow up! It would seem more is to come from the next Repub candidate John McCain who would keep our youngsters coming "for 100 Years" if necessary to make the Sunni? Shite? Terrorists (Bush can't say the word right!) or whoever we are fighting over there cry: "Osama!"
Keith had his A Game in tact tonight as he zeroed in on the irrelevant Bush and his pitiful advisors on this war! What is even better, the voters are beginning to swell in numbers all over the US, thanks to the magnifcent battle waged by Democrats in the battle for the nomination and yes, these same voters are turning up in elections in their respective congressional districts and in three special elections held recently, have knocked Repub candidates on their proverbial asses!! Yes, the numbers are adding up in the House and come November there is no doubt our American voters will have a chance to declare on "Bush years" and without being cocky we Dems will have the unenviable job of cleaning up this total mess, when we sweep into power and totally control the Congress with the Majorities to Act!

LaRussa Does It Again
Yes, of course the Bear knows its still early season, May to be exact but it appears there is a team that most experts predicted would have a woeful season but to their surprise, sits atop the National League Central Divison. THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS
The Cardinals have put together some mighty fine pitching under the leadership of a real stalwart, Dave Duncan, and with a group of young, hungry Redbirds, the ingredients for victory and they don't figure to fold soon.
You have to be impressed with the training they have received from one of the all time greats in managerial prowess, the great LaRussa. St. Louisans are still not warmed to Tony because he lives on the West Coast, is a scholarly barrister, loves animals (maybe even more than the Bear),
and doesn't chew tobacco!
Tony is a strategist who sometimes even drives the Bear crazy with his righty-lefty moves, taking out players, who have had big days and bringing on what might appear to be questionable replacements, even in big games but guess what? He continues place his checkers in the right spots and his teams win!
He is often compared with the great Whitey Herzog longtime St. Louis Cardinal boss, who has always had the ear of baseball lovers and is of the "old school" of managers who no doubt is up there with the best.
But for the Bear, the Cardinals have a great mind and motivator in Mr. LaRussa. How about the jugglingl of his outfield with Barton, Schumacher, Duncan, Ankiel and my favorite Ludwig! What a job he's done here and then there is the work on Izturis, the RedBird shortstop, all but written off by owners and managers all over baseball. He is a valuable bird in the field and his partner on the right side, Troy Glaus makes Rolen lovers forget he was ever a part of the team. Glaus can bash the ball and is a deft fielder at the hot corner.
But it is on the mound where St. Louis starters have totally surprised with Looper, Lohse, Welemeyer, Waignwright, Izzy and a sound relief corps. Yes, these arms have been sturdy and steady!
For some reason in early season games this team has appeared to be a well schooled, closely knit squad on young players surrounded by the best hitter in baseball Albert Pujols and they just play solid baseball. This is a popular and respected team.
So sorry pundits, LaRussa has done it again and as the Cardinals look down at the Cubbies, Brewers, Reds, Pirates and hapless Houston Astros, knowing it will be a long hard fight to win the division we can only say: "Well prepared Tony, well prepared!

DRAFT DAY AT THE WAR ROOM ON PREMIO DR
OK, You fans of the Bear! I'm back after taking close to a month hibernation as my mind was insatiable, and my health exciting to say the least.
But I'm back on a great day, NFL Draft day. Yes, the league has chosen to shorten the time for 1st Round Selections from 15 minutes to 10 and Second Round Selections from 7 minutes to 5, both great decisions as my fanny during these days, often was puckered from waiting for a group of administrators, presidents, GM's and coaches to do their thing and as one writer put it, "all designed to make ESPN analyists talk more and more about their teams." These NFL teams know they are huge and they milk it for all its worth. More on that subject in future blogs! They better watch out, these moguls of the gridiron since "TIMES ARE A CHANGIN!"
Ok, back to the draft. At 2 PM St. Louis time the proceedings will begin and as all of us football nuts know, the Miami Dolphins have already locked up the first pick and signed him Jake Long, the huge offensive tackle from Michigan, a worthy and right pick for this former great team, now somewhat hapless franchise. With this pick the Bear says: "They are on their way back with Parcels in the GM position!"
Our St. Louis Rams, now of Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez will be next "on the clock".
The Rams are expected to select either Chris Long, the hard charging son of Howie, from Virginia or the man-handling DT from LSU Glenn Dorsey. Both are great prospects and will definitely help the St. Louis Rams Defense, much to the satisfaction of Jim Haslitt, the team's defensive co-ordinator.
The Bear would have none of this if he was at the desk calling shots. Undoubtedly he would choose to go in the first two rounds with the best offensive linemen available. First pick would be Ryan Clady, the big, quick and offensive offensive tackle from Boise State. But Bear, the Rams have two tackles Pace and Barron. Well yes! Move one of these dudes to guard, probably Clady, maybe Barron or yes, even the great Pace! Are you kidding? NO NO NO! To quote no one in particular, the best defense is a good offense and the Rams offense last year was offensive to say the least.
I know, we've used the word offensive too many times all ready! If this is offensive to you then I suggest you go over to the defensive lovers and kickers and punters and "talk the talk!"
The Rams have two high powered offensive players in Steven Jackson and Mark Bulger and not to be forgotten Torry Holt and of course our new Offensive Co-ordinator Al Saunders is one of the best in the league. Now hear this all you sports announcers, television reporters, who only know QB's, RB's, and WR's: You win football games in the trenches. The St. Louis Rams, who won the Super Bowl in the late nineties, were led by guess who Orlando Pace and Adam Timmerman and I'll even throw in Fred Miller! Yes, these very skilled and tough linemen opened the holes for the great Marshall to spin and drive and outfox the defenders he met, usually in the secondary because of the up-front blocking of the Rams! Yes, and Kurt Warner could count of these guys plus Faulk to give him the time to get the ball to the great receiver corps which made the Rams "greatest show on turf!"
Now, with the second pick the Bear would go with a guard, Brandon Albert of Virginia. At 6'7 315 this guy is a tower of strength and could even be shifted to tackle if need be. This is the kind of player the Rams need to make the offense purr! Pay him the big bucks and let him maul the opposition! What a player! Unfortunately, he will probably be unavailable by the time the Rams draft again.
Here's a name to consder: Owen Schmitt of West Virginia. 6'2 247 and a punisher! The Rams stupidly let Madison Hidgecock become the fb for the Super Bowl Champs NY Giants and suffered the consequences. Just ask Bulger! Schmitt would be very strong compliment to their offense but will he be out there in round three? Keep him in mind.

Yes, the league has chosen to shorten the time for 1st Round Selections from 15 minutes to 10 and Second Round Selections from 7 minutes to 5, both great decisions as my fanny during these days, often was puckered from waiting for a group of administrators, presidents, GM's and coaches to do their thing and as one writer put it, "all designed to make ESPN analyists talk more and more about their teams." These NFL teams know they are huge and they milk it for all its worth. More on that subject in future blogs! They better watch out, these moguls of the gridiron since "TIMES ARE A CHANGIN!"
Ok, back to the draft. At 2 PM St. Louis time the proceedings will begin and as all of us football nuts know, the Miami Dolphins have already locked up the first pick and signed him Jake Long, the huge offensive tackle from Michigan, a worthy and right pick for this former great team, now somewhat hapless franchise. With this pick the Bear says: "They are on their way back with Parcels in the GM position!"
Our St. Louis Rams, now of Chip Rosenbloom and Lucia Rodriguez will be next "on the clock".
The Rams are expected to select either Chris Long, the hard charging son of Howie, from Virginia or the man-handling DT from LSU Glenn Dorsey. Both are great prospects and will definitely help the St. Louis Rams Defense, much to the satisfaction of Jim Haslitt, the team's defensive co-ordinator.
The Bear would have none of this if he was at the desk calling shots. Undoubtedly he would choose to go in the first two rounds with the best offensive linemen available. First pick would be Ryan Clady, the big, quick and offensive offensive tackle from Boise State. But Bear, the Rams have two tackles Pace and Barron. Well yes! Move one of these dudes to guard, probably Clady, maybe Barron or yes, even the great Pace! Are you kidding? NO NO NO! To quote no one in particular, the best defense is a good offense and the Rams offense last year was offensive to say the least.

BASEBALL OPENERS ARE EXCITING
In one of my favorite opening days of all time, you had to be happy for the Cubby fans of Chicago, who have been waiting for the "Savior" and may have found him in Kosuke Fukodome, their new right fielder, who thrilled all of the baseball world when he wacked one of "greatly uninspiring"
Eric Gagne's ninth inning pitches over the right center field fence to bring the Cubs to a 3-3 tie, ultimately a loss 4-3 in ten innings. But it was a highly emotional moment when the 31 year old Japanese veteran star of the Chunichi Dragons came to the "Windy City" and joined a club searching for just a little more to get them into contention for a trip to the World Series in08.
It was one hundred years ago when Franck Chance led the Cubs of Tinker to Evers to Chance to their last Series championship. Wow! Could this latest Asian slugger be the tonic the Cubs need to make it happen? We shall see. After all, the great Ichiro Suzuki is the standard by which these players are measured, such a great one out there in Seattle where he garnished 238 hits last year and continues to be one of the truly greats of our time. Japanese and Koreans dot the teams of today with followings thousands of miles away that rock!
How about the Red Sox and Baltimore opening their seasons in Japan where baseball is looked upon as a religion and great players abound!
"Fuki", the Bear calls him "Fuki" was three for three on opening day and also made a fine catch of a ball headed for the stands late in the game and Cub fans bowed and cheered his every move.
No "Remember the Seventh of December" anymore in this country! Soon to be up there along with the Koreans and Japanese will be the Chinese who are beginning to sport bats and balls and with their millions of prospects, will blossom forth hopefully not a "card carrying Commie!"
Of course all the fans of the Bear want to know where's and howfars of what is going to happen this baseball season as the GM and Manager of the famous Fantasy Baseball Blue Dart team, which will be in action Saturday April 5 with its drafting in the infamous "Boys Night Out League" is ready with his picks for 2008. You can take these to the bank and prepare to cash in your chips.
